DIY Workshops – Rag Rugs for the Homeless (Session 1)

As part of our new Upcycle series, One Brown Planet was proud to host the very first DIY rag rug DIY workshop. So, on Sunday the 26th Feb a group of 20 volunteers gathered at the Red Room in Taipei to help make rugs for the local homeless.

Estimates vary of the number of homeless people living in Taipei due mainly to the variability on how they are classified. In 2013 up to 4000 people were estimated to be homeless. However, it is estimated that the bottom 5 percent of families reported an average annual income of NT$48,000 (USD1,500), which is well below the poverty line. This year winter has been particularly difficult with cold weather and driving rain. The rugs will be needed more than ever.

Unfortunately, as this was our first DIY workshop, the going was slow but we still managed to have a lot of fun. We had three groups in total all trying to make the best rugs. The first group with Mark worked on the weaving method. The second group with Hsiao-Wen were doing the braiding method. Then a special third group lead by Anne Lee with the more advanced finger weaving method.

We have more planned and will keep you all posted on facebook. Until then, please enjoy the photos from today’s event and we can’t wait for the next one!

And there are more to see on the Red Room page too!
